Parent permission is an integral part of using Artsonia. When you visit Artsonia and give parental consent, you are granting permission for the following:
Consent to use Artsonia if your child is under 13:
Your child's teacher may wish for your child to use a feature of Artsonia called the Class Portal that allows students to submit their own artworks (and titles and statements and other information) directly to Artsonia.
The Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) protects the online privacy of children under the age of 13 and requires Artsonia to obtain parental consent or notice (as appropriate) prior (with limited exceptions) to the collection, use and disclosure of that child's personal information.
When you visit Artsonia and grant permission, you are giving your consent for your child to use Artsonia, including for Artsonia's collection, use and disclosure of your child's personal information as set forth in the notice Artsonia sends to you via email to request your consent. Artsonia currently obtains parental consent through what is commonly referred to under COPPA as "email plus" consent (see FAQ I.4). You will receive a second email from Artsonia after you have given your consent. Artsonia currently initiates the “email plus” consent by one the following methods: 1) your child’s teacher submits your email to Artsonia and we send an email out to you with a link containing your embedded unique parent code; 2) your child’s teacher sends home a paper slip with your child containing your unique parent code and asks you to enter your email and parent code on our website, at which point Artsonia will send an email out to you seeking your consent; 3) your child's teacher supplies parents with a school code, which enables parents to give consent after which the teacher must confirm the email matches the school records; 4) your child's teacher enables the Class Portal and your student enters their name and parent email, at which point Artsonia will send an email to you seeking your consent. or 5) You create a parent account directly on Artsonia, in which part of the process includes confirming an email receipt with all the required notices.
**Note, however, that your child's school or teacher may have already elected to consent on your behalf directly - commonly referred to as "school consent". Under this type of consent, no artwork or related content submitted by children will be shown publicly, unless you, the parent gives parental consent directly to Artsonia. For more information on "school consent" under COPPA, please see the FTC's FAQ Section N regarding this. Please contact your child's teacher if you have any additional questions.
Consent to display my child's artwork publicly:
When teachers (or students) upload their students artworks, titles or statements to their school gallery, those submissions are visible only to the teacher and students from the same school while logged in to either the teacher account or the class portal. This enables teachers to use Artsonia as a classroom-only tool for educational purposes.
By giving parental consent on Artsonia, you, the parent, are giving permission to allow your child’s artwork that does NOT contain personal information to be displayed in the public school gallery, while artwork that DOES contain personal information will NOT be public, but rather only be accessible to the teacher, the student's parents, and other verified fan club members. Please note that we require the teacher to affirmatively represent to us that they have correctly tagged any artwork (and its associated title and statement) corresponding to whether or not it contains personal information prior to publishing the artwork. This flag will determine whether the artwork will be posted in the public gallery, so we encourage you to review each artwork to ensure it was given the appropriate public / private flag by the teacher. Additionally, consistent with the requirements of COPPA, we ensure that any geolocation metadata that may be contained in the image is removed prior to posting on Artsonia.
This parental consent also enables students to receive comments from website visitors, have individuals join their “fan club” (after being verified by the you, the parent), and have your child's artwork available for purchase on custom products in the Artsonia Giftshop (which also helps raise funds for US and Canadian schools).
